Mark Twain Project Online
The Mark Twain Papers, at University of California, Berkeley, are putting their editions on MT online. The most useful items so far are MT's letters up to 1880, annotated and searchable in a variety of ways.

Mark Twain Quotations, Newspaper Collections, & Related Resources
Created by Barbara Schmidt, this contains a wide variety of material that helps locate MT in the context of his times, including 100s of images from Dave Thomson's collection.

Selected UVA History Databases
This is a database page on the Library's VIRGO. Two listed resources in particular are excellent for tracking MT's career across his times: "America's Historical Newspapers" and "Nineteenth Century U.S. Newspapers." VIRGO also contains a lot of other useful searchable databases, like Proquest.

UVA Databases: P
Another VIRGO database page, containing the link to Proquest Historical Newspapers, another great electronic archive. When you use it, be sure to search separately under both "Multiple Databases" and "Interdisciplinary APS Online" options. The first is the engine's default, and searches New York Times and half a dozen other major papers; the second you have to select, but doing so opens up the pages of several hundred small papers.

Making of America (Michigan)
A rich database of 19th century periodicals. There's another "Making of America" database at Cornell.
