Walter Ross~ Bassoon Concerto |

The Bassoon Concerto is one of a series of my concertos written for solo brass or woodwind instruments.
The concerto is in three movements. The first consists of an alternation of two themes--an agile idea designed to display the technical virtuosity of the bassoon, and a more lyrical idea first played by the violins. The second movement is more pastoral in mood. The solo passages sound almost improvised and make use of the plaintive, lyrical qualities of the bassoon. The movement as a whole is relaxed and colorful in its harmonies and flowing rhythms. The third movement is energetic and comical. Like the first movement it consists of two basic ideas in the form A A' B B' A A'.
The work as a whole is freely tonal and is representative of my more recent works in which I avoid harsh dissonances.
