Wind Quintet No. 1 (Divertimento) is in five short, contrasting movements modeled on Hindemith's famous Kleine Kammermusik.

The first is roughly a sonata based on three distinct themes. The second, a waltz, has virtuosic interludes for bassoon and clarinet.

The slow movement uses the In Nomine melody, a favorite of English Renaissance composers as a basis for counterpoint in instrumental works. In a similar manner I weave melodies around the old theme, but I vary the theme each time it appears. As it moves from horn to clarinet to oboe to flute it appears in faster and faster note values. At the end, the bassoon plays the melody in a manner similar to the beginning.

The Burletta parodies, among other things, the waltz theme of the second movement.

The finale is in the form of a rondo, ABACAcoda. The principal theme is in rapi. triplets.

Wind Quintet No. 1 (Divertimento) has been recorded by the Clarion Quintet on GOLDEN CREST RECORDS: CRS-4191.
