This Sonata for viola alone is a neoclassic sonata written with the solo viola music of Hindemith in mind.
The first movement opens with a rhythmically vigorous theme which is followed by a more legato section. These two sections repeat in a varied form, and the first theme returns to form the coda.
The second movement is slow and is in the form of a theme followed by four variations.
An energetic theme opens the last movement, which takes on the structure of the first movement.
