Bamboo is a five-minute work for flute, violin, 'cello, and piano. The composition was written at the request of the composer Fred Cohen of the University of Richmond. He asked several composers to write chamber music based on Japanese haiku, and he then presented a complete concert of this music. My work, then, is a miniature tone-poem on the haiku of Santoka:
Alone, silently
the bamboo shoot
becomes a bamboo
