Cryptical Triptych (or "Three Short Pieces". was one of my first works for trombone and was written at the request of the Chilean pianist, Carla Hubner, who was performing recitals at the time with the Norwegian/American trombonist Per Brevig. It was written in the "avant guarde? style of the '60's; that is, it is atonal and makes full use of all kinds of trombone techniques:slide and lip vibrato, various mutes, lip glissandos, etc., etc.
Cryptical Triptych, as the title suggests, is in three (short) movements. It is in the atonal, avant-garde style of the time, with many "effects" and some unmeasured sections. It is an effective recital piece and has been performed throughout the U.S. as well as in many places in Europe. It has also been used as a contest piece for advanced student trombonists.
Comments from the program notes of one performance indicate that Cryptical Triptych uses a wide variety of new sounds and techniques-- clusters, free rhythm, instrumental exploitation, multiple tone colors, stylistic borrowing-- or "all the things you wanted to do and never had the courage". The sounds are quite carefully organized into contrasting patterns and well balanced designs.
