Canzona IV

Canzona IV is based on Poe's "Masque of the Red Death". A prince, trying to escape a plague, gathers his friends for a masked ball while shutting all the doors to outsiders. As the evening progresses, the dancing becomes more frenzied, and the ominous clock strikes each hour. The final waltz is interrupted by the appearance of an uninvited guest--the Red Death himself.

The work was premiered by Per Brevig in Bergen, Norway in May of 1989 He also conducted it with a chamber brass ensemble from Julliard at Alice Tully Hall in New York in March 1990.
