Who We Are

The Solar Car Team, a recognized student organization at the University of Virginia, exposes students to the challenges facing practicing professionals through the design, funding, and construction of a solar-powered vehicle. The Team links students from a broad range of engineering, science, and business disciplines in order to foster a cooperative and inclusive learning environment. The interdisciplinary nature of this project provides students with a realistic look at engineering ventures from both a business and industry perspective.

The promotion of solar-powered technology remains among the Team's underlying motivations. As research expands its practicality, the Team hopes to demonstrate that solar-power, when used in conjunction with other clean sources of energy, can serve as a sensible alternative to fossil fuels. Consider our Team: we're producing zero-emissions cars that can keep pace on the speediest of highways on the power of a hair-dryer; the possibilities are truly inspiring. In addition to solar-power, the Team encourages innovative advances in sustainable transportation technology on both the individual and mass-transit levels. Indeed, a solar car epitomizes the kind of forward-thinking practices in sustainable design necessary in our evermore congested streets.

But as with any developing technology, the success of both solar-power and sustainable transportation hinges on continued interest and diligent research in their respective fields. The Team wishes to inspire such interest and research through the design and construction of our solar-powered vehicles.

In spite of the competitive nature of solar car racing, the Team encourages intercollegiate cooperation as a means to serve the Team's underlying motivations: namely, the promotion and development of solar-powered technology and innovative advances in sustainable transportation technology; therefore, the Team is eager to provide help to maturing teams.

The Solar Car Team is headquartered in the University of Virginia's Nuclear Reactor Building. The Solar Car Team functions as a non-profit, educational entity operating under the auspices of the University of Virginia.
