This course is an introduction to major challenges facing civil engineering infrastructures, including transportation systems, water and wastewater systems, and the built urban environment. The course emphasizes how civil engineering designs may contribute to or alleviate difficulties with infrastructure performance. The current focus of the course is on infrastructure sustainability in the developed and developing world, integration of information and sensor technology into infrastructure, infrastructure security, and risk, resiliency and design for natural disasters. As individuals and groups, students will research emerging solutions to infrastructure challenges.
