How it all began...
FM is simply a group of Morgan fans who realized the lack of any formal organization to help Morgans who have fallen upon hard times. This led to the creation of the ForeverMorgans internet group on Yahoo, which has members across the United States and Canada, and around the world. Our goal is to share information about Morgans in need, and to network in order to place them in safe homes. To facilitate this effort, we began working with Another Chance 4 Horses.
So how exactly do you save them?...
Many of the horses we save come to our attention through Another Chance 4 Horses. AC4H is a registered non-profit equine rescue in Bernville, Pennsylvania. AC4H members attend the nearby New Holland auction every Monday. This auction is frequented by kill buyers, and horses often leave New Holland to be sold for slaughter in meat plants in Canada (such as Cavel) and in Mexico, for human consumption overseas.
AC4H staff contacts ForeverMorgans about registered and grade Morgans who have been found in kill pens or who have been purchased by those brokers who sell directly to meat plants. ForeverMorgans then raises funds by taking pledges, as a group, in order to pay the horse's price (we refer to it as "bail" or "ransom" !) but only after we have confirmed an offer of an approved foster home, or forever home, and a place to quarantine.
ForeverMorgans also operates in private cases such as voluntary surrenders or other emergencies, and we try to monitor "free horse" advertisements in order to identify potentially dangerous situations.
We are committed to a full accounting of how our funds are disbursed, for which horses, and for which expenses. In addition, we require that horses rescued via FM not be sold for profit, or given away to any party which has not applied for and received permission from us. ForeverMorgans takes responsibility for re-homing any horse placed through us and who subsequently may need to be moved again.
ForeverMorgans does not have a "no breeding" clause... what we do have is a "have to get permission first" clause. This was a hotly debated topic in the early years of FM. We decided that as Morgans are such a small breed (in comparison to some others), when rare lines show up in a rescue horse, it may be in the breed's best interest to allow very strictly controlled breeding. These examples are decided on a case-by-case basis, upon request of the Forever owner, to the Board of Directors.
And how much does all this cost?...
The initial cost for each horse, after a new home has been secured, is his or her "bail". Typically this ranges from $300 to $800. Coggins is approximately $50, and depending on the new location, a health certificate may be required. Then we need to collect shipping charges, which currently can be even more expensive than "bail" (although we are grateful to work with some haulers who offer discounted rates for rescue horses when possible). If quarantine is necessary at a facility other than one of our own member's, the average cost is $300 per month. During the quarantine period, horses are evaluated in terms of health, training level, and personality, to help assure their most suitable placement.
Our Mission Statement:
ForeverMorgans is an organization of volunteers whose purpose is to be a resource for Morgans in need, whether they are surrendered, rescued from shelters, auctions, kill buyers, or simply removed from potentially dangerous situations. ForeverMorgans wishes to open our virtual barn doors to all Morgans in need of safe and loving homes. We focus on registered Morgans but will consider unregistered Morgans on a case-by-case basis.
ForeverMorgans is eternally grateful to Katie Rall Jump, who many years ago realized there was a need to rescue Morgans. From the seed of her idea, this organization was born.
