Ueno Park in the Spring

Here is a walk from the Ueno train station through the Ueno Park to the west of the station. Most of the cherry blossoms are still on the trees for this walk around mid-April.

Ueno park has many broad walkways offsetting grassy areas. It has the Tokyo Zoo, the Tokyo National Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall and several smaller museums. It also has some lovely small Shinto temples.

In the center of the park is a broad walkway with fountains. At the north end of the park is the National Museum shown in this shot.

In the central plaza, street performers command an audience. Here an acrobatic troupe is doing balancing acts in a fairly brisk wind.

There are also several smaller walks that lead to temples. We'll take one of these to see the largest of these temples and the five story pagoda in the park.

The five story pagoda is almost obscured by the cherry blossoms.

Here is another view of the pagoda with one of a row of mammoth stone lanterns shown in the foreground. The lanterns line the walk to the temple.

Here is a view of the Shinto temple. A cloth covers the entrance. It blows in the breeze, showing an occasional glimpse of the gilded interior.

Another sidewalk and stairs are set off by traditional Torii gates.

At the bottom of the stairs is another small, secluded temple.

We will end our walk with a close-up of a blossom on a tree beside the temple.
