The Gellert Hotel and Spa in Budapest

While in Budapest I stayed in the Hotel Gellert. It is a famous landmark hotel and spa that is built on the site of one of the oldest spas in the area. The rooms are small, but clean. And you have full privilege of the ornate spas and swimming pools. Two hot water spas are single sex only while the swimming pools are mixed. The water is reputed to have healing powers. Just across the street is a cave church built in style of the Lourdes grotto.

The interior of the hotel has some lovely elements. I was on what we in the U.S. would call the 5th floor, but here is only the 3rd floor. Going up the staircase are lovely stained glass windows depicting a Hungarian legend of a magic stag.

The exterior of the Hotel is grand, but is in need of a face lift. Pictured here is the entrance to the spa at the side of the hotel.

From the front of the hotel you look across the Danube to the school of economics on the far side of the river. On the other side of the river is Pest. I saved a walk for another day, since it was raining heavily the day I arrived.

At the front of the hotel is a fountain that is fed from the spring. Local people come by and fill up bottles of water from the fountain for a free mineral water drink.
