Pawprints' Guide to
Central Virginia Animal Organizations

This web page began as a personal bookmark list that I usedwhile working as a volunteer at my local animal shelter. While my volunteercareer has taken another direction (see this), so many people have found this page useful that I am committed tomaintaining this list of animal-related organizations in my area, in order toassist local pet owners and would-be pet owners in finding the resources theyneed. Thank you very much to everyone whohas emailed me over the past few years to help me keep this page as up-to-dateas possible.

Please Note: This list is forinformational purposes only. Inclusion on this list does not imply myendorsement. In fact, my only contact with 99% of these organizations is bytheir email request to be listed. I am not a current shelter volunteer.

If you are looking for a pet, try Petfinder . Manyof the shelters and rescues below are members!

If you know of a local organization that should be listed here, or if youhave any updates or corrections, mailto:pawprints@virginia.edu . With few exceptions, I do NOT listcommercial enterprises or nationwide shelters, rescues, or programs unless theyhave a local representative in this area. These organizations are easily foundelsewhere on the web using any search engine (I like Google ). Mydefinition of "central Virginia"is at my discretion. My, I'm cranky today.

IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING A LISTING:Please take a look at the way other groups are listed and provide similarinformation. Let me know which category you'd like to be put in. (SPCA's & Humane Societies generally are open-admissionand euthanize. Sanctuaries and no-kills are usuallyrestricted admission, and euthanize only critically illor otherwise unadoptable animals. Breed rescues limittheir work to certain breeds or mixes.) A one- or two-line mission statementcan be included. I've been lifting these off websites, but it would be helpfulif you provided it.

Feel free to link to this page, but do not copy it to your site. You mayprint a single copy for personal use (I suggest keeping it by the phone) butdon't forget, information changes frequently, especially in volunteer-basedorganizations, so keep checking back here for the latest information.
