Physics 142W Workshop
Spring 2008
Course Coordinator: Rick Marshall
Grading Policy
The workshop will be graded as follows:
• The pre-lab homework is worth 20%.
• The weekly lab is worth 50%. Your grade is based on your performance in the
laboratory as evidenced by what you turn in each week.
• The post-lab quiz is worth 30%.
No scores will be dropped. Lab scores will be curved based on your TA’s students only
(to take account of the different grading scales of the TA’s). Final grades are determined
by relative class “rank”, not by a predefined numerical scale. Historically, the
average grade in 142W has been between B and B+.
Algorithm
First, look on WebAssign to get your raw Homework (H), Lab (L),
and Quiz (Q) scores.
Second, use Table 1 (below) to find your TA’s average
assigned lab score (LTA) and the
associated standard deviation (σTA) as well as the
overall statistics (LOA and σOA ).
Third, calculate your curved lab score as follows: LC = (L-LTA )×σOA /σTA + LOA.
Fourth, calculate your final score: S = 0.2×H + 0.5×LC + 0.3×Q
Finally, look up your letter grade in Table 2 (below).
Example
The student’s scores (from WebAssign):
H: 93.22%
L: 92.51%
Q: 72.73%
Their TA’s statistics:
LTA : 94.21%
σTA : 6.05%
Overall statistics:
LOA: 93.72%
σOA : 5.71%
The curved Lab score is then: LC = (92.51% - 94.21%) × 5.71%/6.05% + 93.72% = 92.12%
The final score is then: S = 0.2×93.22% + 0.5×92.12% + 0.3×72.73% = 86.52%,
which maps to a letter grade of B.
