The Good Person of Sichuan
by Bertolt Brecht

Return to Title Page

The Good Person of Sichuan was composed of numerous visual elements. The wide-open stage held large scenic pieces manipulated by the actors, an LED signboard displaying titles and running commentary, multiple actor manipulated lighting effects, automated lighting effects, and fog. Other environmental elements included live music and sound effects. The director created and cast the parts of Bertolt Brecht Ruth Berlau (the playwright and his partner) and included them in the show as well. They watched the action moved around the stage, and even improvised commentary occasionally interrupting the actors to repeat part of the performance the way the director might.

The voice of the stage manager was heard by the audience as sound and lighting cues going into and out of scenes were called. The technical crews were relocated to positions within the audience to bring all levels of the production into the audiences experience.
