Work
The students in this course are first-year students
with no prior experience in lighting design or technology (with a couple
of exceptions). The project samples below represent some of the work
on practical projects completed as part of this course since it was
first offered in 1996.
Psychedelic
Light Show Project 2007. Light Lab. Department of Drama, University
of Virginia.
In this project from Fall 2007 students worked in
small groups to produce short light shows to accompany period music
(1966-1970). Students worked hands-on in two two-hour lab sessions with
a variety of materials to produce the light shows.

Live Light Show Project 2007. Light Lab. Department of Drama, University
of Virginia.
In this project from Fall 2007 students worked in
pairs to create one-minute light shows to a musical segment. Lighting elements (chases, sequences, and effects) were pre-built by the instructor and improvised live by the students (four hands on two consoles). A total of two -hours of experimentation/practice sessions was available for this project.

Final Light Show Project 2007. Helms Theatre. Department of Drama, University
of Virginia.
In this project from Fall 2007 students worked alone or in small groups to create a pre-programmed time-coded light show to accompany a short piece of music. Programming time ranged from 2.5-7.5 hours.

Lighting Workshop 1997, Helms Theatre, Department of Drama, University
of Virginia.
In this project from 1997 the students worked in groups
to produce different elements for our psychedelic environment including:
liquid light show, black light effects, multi-color/pattern effects,
and symbols of 60's lighting (lava lamps, strobe lights, etc).
