Dave Matthews Band 2006 Summer Tour

These sources were prepared for students prior to a tour during the load-in given by Lighting Designer Fenton Williams at the John Paul Jones Arena on September 21st 2006. Resources include general tour info, personnel information, and detailed technical information about the equipment used on the tour. Product specifications and information for the GrandMA console. Two of these consoles were used on the Dave Matthews Band 2006 tour, one (run by Lighting Designer Fenton Williams) to primarily control lighting and the other (operated by Programmer and co-collaborator Aaron Stinebrink) primarily to control three Catalyst media servers and associated LED-based lo-res and hi-res screens. A third GrandMA lite was provided as a backup console but was never used.

This unit provided much of the over-stage color washes for the show with the ability to make rapid color changes and smooth moves into the audience and back.

Product specifications and information for the Vari-Lite 3000 Spot automated unit manufactured by Vari-Lite, Inc. and used on the Dave Matthews Band 2006 tour. The 28 VL3000s on the show provided primarily static or rotating patterns for the stage and in the atmosphere often sweeping into the audience. The unit's fast zoom and its wide-range 10° to 60° allow the units to be tightly focused on stage or expand quickly to fill the entire space of an arena. The graceful movements of these units along with their quick response to manual control of gobo rotation, gobo wheel rotation, iris, and zoom helped give this show its distinctive high-tech yet live feel.

Product specifications and information for the Synchrolite SX3K-2 3000watt Xenon moving head automated unit. Four of these units were used on the 2006 Dave Matthews Band tour primarily as powerful color changing back light/color washes. The units are also able to focus down in to highly concentrated beams that are able to punch through all of the other lighting elements in the show. These units stood out particularly when focused up high moving through the truss and out into the arena like searchlights.

Product information about the Thomas PixelPar 90 compact LED wash light. The units were used as truss-mounted toners on the 2006 Dave Matthews Band tour. As with the other LED units these could effect rapid and vibrant color changes on the silver trusses used in the show.

Product information for the Catalyst media server software. On 2006 Dave Matthews Band tour Catalyst ran on 3 mac G5 machines to serve media to three high-res LED-based video screens and two lo-res screens for graphic content placed further upstage. The Catalyst machines were controlled primarily via one of two GrandMA consoles used on the show.
