Guard by RLBeaton.

What is the practice schedule?

We rehearse with the full band on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (for game weeks) from 6:00pm-8:25pm. The Guard also has highly recommended Monday practices during game weeks. If any academic classes interfere with rehearsal those absences are excused.

Do I get class credit?

Color Guard members enroll in the same class (MUBD 2610, MUBD 2620, MUBD 2630, or MUBD 2640) and receive the same amount of class credit (2 credits) as band members.

Do I have to pay for anything?

Students will be responsible for dues of only $50, this money will be used to purchase shoes, gloves, and uniform accessories. However, the Cavalier Marching Band provides all Color Guard members with a uniform and special warm-up suit.

What previous experience is required?

No previous experience is required.  However, if you have no previous experience it is strongly encouraged that you attend our summer pre-camp. This will give you an opportunity to learn the required basics needed for auditions.

What is the summer pre-camp?

Summer pre-camp is a weekend camp in the middle of the summer, before normal band camp to teach basics to new spinners and to beginning learning routines for the pre-game show. The pre-camp is not required but highly recommended.

What equipment will we be using?

The color guard's equipment will consist of flags and rifles.

Do I need to go to the pre-camp in order to make the Color Guard?

No, but the pre-camp is highly recommended.

What will occur at the pre-camp?

The pre-camp will consist of sessions covering flag and dance basics as well as learning routine to the pre-game show.

What will be the audition process?

Auditions will begin in the evening of August 15th, 2009. You will be evaluated on your understanding of flag basics, positive attitude, and how quickly you can learn routines.

How do I prepare for the pre-camp, audition, and season?

Build up stamina. The Color Guard rehearses outside most of band camp and during August, Charlottesville can get pretty warm. If you have spun before review your basics and build up arm strength. If you have never spun before, attend the summer pre-camp! We will provide you with a flag so that you can practice for your audition for the rest of the summer until Band Camp.

Will joining the Cavalier Marching Band be one of the best things I do in college?

YES! Ask any of the leadership via email!
