Welcome

The Home Page of Peter Malcolm at the University of Virginia.
I'm a PhD student in the Instructional Technology program at the Curry School of Education.

This is a link to the web-based version of the Estimation Calculator that I am developing with Dr. Robert Berry.

The code that evaluates expressions in the Estimation Calculator was developed by:
Barbara Kaskosz of the University of Rhode Island (bkaskosz(at)math.uri.edu) and
Douglas E. Ensley of Shippensburg University (DEEnsley(at)ship.edu).
You can find more info about the math parser code at www.flashandmath.com HERE.

Developing the Estimation Calculator for the iPhone / iPod Touch

Together with Dr. Robert Berry I developed an iPhone app version of the Estimation Calculator. Here is the iPhone / iPod / iPad App on iTunes, and a link to an online presentation (prezi) about computational estimation, and a pilot study we ran in a Charlottesville elementary school in 2010.

Research Assistantship at UVa

project parallax I am a graduate research assistant with Dr. Tonya Moon and Dr. Catherine Brighton on Project Parallax. I develop interactive Flash applications for elementary students and manage our remote data collection via IP cameras in classrooms. This is a multi-year study in southwest Virginia, offering professional development to 2nd - 5th grade teachers on how to lead problem-based STEM units and identify and support gifted children.

Master's Research at UIC

link to wallcology application demo
In 2009, I received my Masters in C.S. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. There I was working with Dr. Tom Moher on Embedded Phenomena which are extended, whole class simulations that use multiple devices in one classroom to show different parts of the same scientific simulation. Elementary children learn by interacting and collecting data. This is a link to a demo of WallCology.
