Equilibrium Conditions
line_brown.gif (78 bytes)

For single-plane, static systems, there are three equilibrium conditions that must be met:

1) The sum of the forces in the x-direction must equal zero
2) The sum of the forces in the y-direction must equal zero
3) The sum of the moments about any axis perpendicular to the x-y plane must equal zero
Moment = (Force) x (Shortest distance between the axis and the line of direction that the force acts in)

Determinacy: Structure is statically determinant if there are three unknown reactions.
