Safe Routes to School at Johnson Elementary in Charlottesville, Virginia-

Safe Routes to School is a national program which the Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation brought to Charlottesville in 2002. Throughout the Fall 2006 semester, U.Va. School of Architecture students and the Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation (ACCT) have teamed up to make walking and biking to school a viable option for Charlottesville's kids. By implementing Safe Routes to School at Johnson Elemementary, we hope to create a model through which all of Charlottesville's schools can implement the program.

Through interaction with the Johnson Elementary community, the Safe Routes to School team, through the PLAC 401 Planning Workshop, has worked to gather and analyze data pertaining to the area's walkability in order to make assessments and recommendations about the quality of the existing walking network in the school's vicinity. Please explore the site to learn about Safe Routes to School and the plan for Johnson Elementary.
