CHALLENGE:
Create a multi-track recording of an original song. STATEMENT: We
started by recording acoustic guitar tracks, played
and written by Will Anderson. His performance was recorded
twice, on two monophonic tracks. We panned one guitar
track to the left channel and the other to the right.
Next, Luke Rabin added a djembe performance. Two
microphones were placed on the instrument, one at the
head and
one at the base. The microphone at the base was used
to capture the low frequencies and the upper microphone
captured the sound of the drum head. We ran out of
class time at this point. Marcus Lipsey and Chris Olsen
took a rough mix with them to construct a lyrics and
a melody. Between class meetings,
I recorded myself playing a dulcimer.
Upon our next meeting,
we started recording vocals. Marcus Lipsey sang the
vocals. We recorded him on three separate tracks. These
tracks were panned center, a bit left, and a bit right.
This gave us a "chorus" effect for the vocals.
Jordy and Chris wrote a short lyric to be spoken, and
we
got our friend Guy Mason to record this for us. Finally,
Matt Fletcher added some unison vocals and a single
electric guitar part that harmonized with the dulcimer.
We ran
out
of class
time
again.
For our third class
period, we spent time mixing the recording. We discussed
equalization, compression, limiting, reverb, chorus,
and other effects. Once we found a mix we liked, we
performed some mastering techniques on the song.

CHALLENGE:
Create a remix of the above song using Propellerhead's Reason
3.0.
STATEMENT: We
created a wave file of the above mix and imported it into a
sampler plugin within Reason 3.0. This way we could trigger
the song via a key on a MIDI controller. We set Reason's tempo
to that of the original mix. Using various virtual instruments,
synth bass, sampled drums, tambourine loops, and synthesizer
were added. Will Anderson played the synth bass part. Luke
Rabin suggested how to perform the sampled drum parts, and
Michael Rasbury played them. The synthesizer was played by
Michael Rasbury.
Next, we opened the original
multi-track file in Digital Performer as described above. We
opened Reason and "patched" the virtual instruments
so they would be transferred in real time from Reason to audio
tracks
in Digital Performer. After "capturing" the tracks, we remixed
the song and converted it to a stereo .mp3 file.
