The Semi-Literate Rants have moved to http://www.people.virginia.edu/~mdz4c/blog/.

I am a senior graduate student in the Structural & Computational Biology and Biophysics prgram at the University of Virginia, seeking my Ph.D. I'm interested in macromolecular structure determination by means of x-ray crystallography. I'm currently working in the lab of Dr. Wladek Minor, developing an expert system for tracking and analyzing crystallization experiments for structural genomics.

I grew up just outside of Johnstown, PA. I attended Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA, graduating cum laude with a B.S. in Biochemistry in May of 1998. I did research as an undergraduate both at Juniata and at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. As a grad student, I've attended many meetings, and frequently travel to the Advanced Photon Source to collect data.

I'm proud to be a geek-- I've switched to GNU/Linux, I'm a fair Perl hacker and I have several years experience administrating Linux and Windows systems in the lab and at home. I've been involved with the Wesley Foundation, the University's United Methodist student group, and I am a member of Wesley Memorial U.M.C. next door. I also run (slowly), hike (even slower), write (bad) fiction, sing (actually, pretty well), and watch more television than I care to admit.

I currently live in Charlottesville, VA.
