Dr. Sabato's latest book is a critical study of the nation's politics, entitled DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS: The Resurgence of Corruption in American Politics, published by Random House/Times Books in April 1996. Topics covered include Newt Gingrich, the Christian Coalition, vote fraud, street money, political dirty tricks, and the need for reform. Prior to the publication of DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS, Dr. Sabato's best known book was entitled Feeding Frenzy: How Attack Journalism Has Transformed American Politics. Published in 1991 and again in 1993 by the Free Press/Macmillan, the book received widespread attention nationally during the 1992 presidential election. Five of Dr. Sabato's other recent books are: PAC POWER: Inside the World of Political Action Committees, which focuses on the phenomenal growth of PACs and their influence on American elections (published by W. W. Norton and Company in 1984); THE PARTY'S JUST BEGUN: Shaping Political Parties for America's Future (Little Brown and Co., 1988), which examines the condition of the political parties and proposes ways to strengthen them; Paying for Elections (The Twentieth Century Fund, 1989), which advocates reforms in the financing of campaigns; Campaigns and Elections (Scott, Foresman, 1989), a sourcebook of the new techniques used in American politics; and American Government: Roots and Reform (Allyn & Bacon), co-authored with Karen O'Connor of American University (3rd edition - 1996). Dr. Sabato's previous books include an investigation of the influential corps of American political consultants and their new campaign technologies (such as polling, direct mail, and television advertising) entitled, The Rise of Political Consultants: New Ways of Winning Elections (New York: Basic Books, 1981) and a study of the American state governors over thirty years, Goodbye to Good-Time Charlie: The American Governorship Transformed (Washington, D. C.: Congressional Quarterly Press, 1983-Second Edition). Nine other books and monographs have been written about Virginia politics, including a study of the rise and fall of the Democratic machine in Virginia, The Democratic Party Primary: Tantamount to Election No Longer (Charlottesville: The University Press of Virginia, 1977). He is the author of the seven-volume Virginia Votes series chronicling all state elections, as well as many articles on national and state politics. Dr. Sabato has appeared on dozens of nationally broadcast television shows, including "Nightline", "Face the Nation", "The Today Show", "Good Morning America", "48 Hours, and "Larry King Live." Dr. Sabato has served on many national and state commissions, including the National Commission for the Renewal of American Democracy; the U.S. Senate Campaign Finance Reform Panel; and the Governor's Commission on Campaign Finance Reform, Government Accountability, and Ethics. Dr. Sabato is the recipient of more than two dozen major scholarships, grants, and academic awards, including a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, the Outstanding Young Teacher Award from the University of Virginia, and the 1993 Outstanding Professor Award from the Virginia State Council of Higher Education. His visiting appointments include that of Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution and Thomas Jefferson Visiting Fellow at Downing College, Cambridge University, England. | ||
