This page has been designed to support the use of author studies in PreK - 6 classrooms. Through the use of author studies, we accomplish multiple goals. First, we introduce children to the works of outstanding writers of children's literature. Second, we create situations in which children can revel in th sounds of carefully crafted literary language. Third, because many authors produce texts at a range of readabilites, we create situations in our classrooms where children can read books appropriate for either their instructional or independent levels while feeling a part of classroom projects.

About Cynthia Rylant

Click on the dog if you'd like to hear Cynthia reading from "When I Was Young in the Mountains"

Cynthia Rylant came late to children's books. Growing up with her grandparents in West Virginia, she had never been to a public library until she was unable to find a job as an English teacher, and took a library position instead. There she found her future, her "calling" as she has said.

Her autobiographical first book "When I Was Young in the Mountains" was a great success, although Cynthia herself was less than pleased with Goode's neat and tidy representation of Rylant and her family. The less-tidy look she sought can be found in Stephen Gammel's Caldecott-honor winning illustrations of "The Relatives Came."

Rylant did not have the easiest of childhoods, as she recounts in her autobiography "But I'll Be Back Again."
