Teaching Experience During my studies doctoral studies, I was
fortunate to be appointed a ‘program
teaching assistant’ for the Accelerated
Masters Program in Systems Engineering (2006 to 2009). As the head teaching assistant for an entire masters
program, my responsibilities went beyond those of a regular teaching
assistant, including administrative, retention and mentoring duties to name a
few. It also allowed me the opportunity to follow student transformation as
the degree progressed. This gave me great insight into teaching and student
learning. One of my best experiences of being a teaching assistant to an
entire Master’s program was co-supervising Master’s projects. My participation in the Tomorrow’s
Professor Today Certificate Program gave me great insight into teaching.
Currently, I am a teaching assistant to a 3rd year class in
deterministic decision models. I was the
teaching assistant for the Accelerated
Masters Program in Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia from
May 2006 to August 2009. My responsibilities extended further than that of a
standard teaching assistant. Some of my responsibilities were: o Teaching assistant for final
Master of Engineering projects. o Sat on panel to evaluate
final Masters Projects. o Evaluate students’
progress throughout the program. o Manage teaching
assistants. o Mentor and provide help in
student retention. o Evaluate students’
progress throughout the program. I have also
been a teaching assistant for the following courses: o
Applied mathematics-partial differential equations (graduate) o
Systems integration (graduate) o
Applied probability models (graduate) o
Heuristics (graduate) o
Simulation (graduate) o
Introduction to systems engineering (graduate) o
Engineering economics-game theory (graduate) o
Topics in decision analysis (graduate), o
Financial engineering (graduate) o
Global economics (graduate) o
Ethics (graduate) o
Deterministic decision models (undergraduate) o
Final year capstone project (undergraduate). I substituted for the
professor for the following course: o Deterministic decision
models (undergraduate) o Financial engineering
(graduate). I took part
in the Tomorrow’s
Professor Today Certificate Program offered by the Teaching Resource Center at the
University of Virginia. Some of the requirements were: o Attended series of
workshops on teaching and learning, and life in academe. o Designed course –
syllabus, learning objectives, assessment, and lecture notes. o Interviewed faculty and
teaching assistants on their teaching methodology. o Wrote and contemplated two
reflective essays on teaching and learning. o Consulted with experts on
teaching methodologies and professional development. Some of the
teaching workshops that I participated in: o Production and Information
Management conference doctoral student consortium, to be held in May 2010 o INFORMS Future Academician
Colloquium, October 2009. o Overcoming the imposter syndrome,
March 2009. o Student advising, February
2009. o University organization,
October 2008. o Syllabus: contract or
invitation, July 2008. o Student as speaker:
Developing Oral skills, January 2008. o Collaborative learning:
Helping students learn how to learn, January 2008. o Dealing with end of
semester evaluations, November 2007. o Tips and thoughts on being
a better classroom teacher, October 2007. o Teaching in different
environments, March 2007. o Careers in academia, April
2006. I presented
the following teaching workshops to new teaching assistants
(university-wide): o Rajaratnam K. (2009). Difficult classroom situations.
Presented at the August Teaching Workshop, Charlottesville, VA. o Rajaratnam K. (2009). Get practical advice about how to keep the
butterflies under control and get your class off to a good start.
