Biosketch

K. Preston White, Jr., is Professor of Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia, where he serves as Director of the University of Virginia Institute for Microelectronics (UVIM) and founding Director of the Semiconductor Manufacturing Information Technology Center (SMITC).  His research interests include discrete-event simulation, data analysis, knowledge discovery, and optimization.  He is particularly interested in the integration of decision and information technologies and applications in manufacturing and service systems.  He has published over 100 scholarly articles in these areas.

 

Dr. White was born in Port Chester, NY, in 1948.  Dr. White received the B.S.E. (1970) in mechanical engineering and the M.S. (1972) and Ph.D. (1976) in systems and control engineering from Duke University.  He was Assistant Professor in the ORSA Department at Polytechnic University (1975-77) and in the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy Departments at Carnegie-Mellon University (1977-79). Dr. White’s experience also includes positions as Faculty-in-Residence in the Advanced Technologies Division of Newport News Shipbuilding (1986) and as Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Modeling and Statistical Methods Division of SEMATECH (1993-94). In the Systems Engineering program at Virginia, he has served as Director of Undergraduate Studies (1983-1996), interim Department Chairman (1996), and currently leads the award-winning undergraduate Capstone Program. 

 

Dr. White is U.S. Editor for International Abstracts in Operations Research and Associate Editor for International Journal of Intelligent Automation and IEEE Transactions on Electronics Packaging Manufacturing.  He also has served as Associate Editor for Automatica.  Dr. White is a member of INFORMS, SCS, and INCOSE and a senior member of IEEE and IIE.  He has served on the AdCom of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society and as chairman of the IEEE/SMC Technical Committee on System Simulation. He sits on the Boards of the Winter Simulation Conference; the Virginia Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis Center; and the University of Virginia Institute for Microelectronics.  He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and Sigma XI and a charter member of Omega Rho. On behalf of the Systems Engineering program at Virginia, he accepted the first ABET Award for Educational Innovation. Dr. White is a past winner of an NSF Graduate Fellowship, the SAE Teetor Educational Award, and the Boeing Outstanding Educator Award.
