In the preview process, students review the models and associated drawings in their section and predict for each project whether it will finish in the top, middle, or bottom tier of load carrying capacity, using a form which is later used to gauge the degree of accuracy of the predictions.

For those projects selected in the top tier, the student records the prediction as a vote on a form associated with the project. The image below shows a model and drawings on display for inspection.

The model receiving the most votes is set aside for a second round of testing with top-voted models from other sections. Models not broken in the first round (with a maximum load of 68 pounds) also move to the second round

The preview and prediction phase is followed by the testing phase, with intense interest from the crowd.
