Carnac Island: At the end of September I spent two days on Carnac Island with two French researchers observing and helping with their tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) study. The system on Carnac Island is incredible. The island is small (16 ha) and they estimate that there are over 400 adult tiger snakes on this island. One reason the densities are so high is that the island has an extremely large colony of nesting seagulls and the adult snakes eat the chicks. As a consequence, the snakes are often attacked by the seagulls and many of the snakes on the island are half-blind or completely blind- and they continue to thrive! The bush vegetation on the island is extremely thick, but when you go out in the morning before the heat of the day, the snakes are basking everywhere.
