Using GIS to Determine Natural History Characteristics of the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus admanteus)

December, 2001

Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus) are declining throughout the Southeastern United States. Until recently, this decline was not widely noticed and conservation efforts did not focus on this species (Ernst, 1992; Martin and Means, 1999-2000). When a species is in need of protection, it is important to consider the ecology of the species carefully. Conservation efforts that focus on the wrong type of habitat or do not allow enough area for a species are a waste of precious resources. The ultimate goal of this project is to provide data to assist in the conservation of the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake.
