Historic Virginia Buildings Seminars:

· Historic Virginia Buildings: 1607-1830

· The Pre-Georgian, Georgian, and Federal Periods

Explore the history of architecture in Virginia and the variety of styles represented in its unique buildings. This course provides an overview of architecture from the founding of Virginia to the beginning of the Greek Revival. Through slides and lectures, you will learn about American architectural styles, particularly Virginian; historic preservation; how to determine a building's age from its details, saw marks, brick bonds, nails, and construction; the Germanic architecture of the Shenandoah Valley and log buildings on the frontier; Pre-Georgian architecture (1607-1700); Georgian public and domestic architecture (1700-1780); Federal architecture (1780-1830); and Jefferson's master builders (1800-1830).

· The Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Victorian, and Eclectic periods

Virginia is rich in architecture from many different periods. This course provides an overview of architecture from the Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and Victorian periods, as well as the Eclectic period as illustrated in many of the mansions that dot our countryside. Through slides and lectures, you will learn about Virginia's great buildings and styles. You will also learn how to determine a building's age from its details, saw marks, brick bonds, nails, and construction.

Topics include: Overview of Architectural Styles in Virginia, The Classical Orders, Greek Revival Architecture 1830-1860, Gothic Revival Architecture 1830-1860, Victorian Architecture 1860-1900, Eclectic Architecture 1890-1939, Field Dating of Buildings, Archival Research and documentation

· Non-credit evening two-hour classes and two all-day Saturday field trips to historic areas and some of the finest private plantations in local Virginia not normally open to the public.
