Service and Outreach
Outreach:
-
A two-week math, science, and engineering camp for middle school students run by the UVA Center for Diversity in Engineering. I taught math challenge sesions that used number
theory, geometry, and algebra puzzles to emphasize problem solving and encourage students to continue their studies in mathematics.
-
A one-week camp, sponsored by the UVA Center for Diversity in Engineering, for rising high school juniors and seniors who are interested in engineering.
Students learn about the many areas of engineering and the skills they will need to be successful through a series of workshops.
I taught a daily Calculus workshop that introduced students to derivatives and their applications.
-
A mathematical modeling contest for teams of undergraduate students at the University of Virginia. Students learn how to approach modeling problems and write
reports summarizing their results. Winning teams compete in the COMAP Mathematical Contest in Modeling,
an international competition, and have been recognized as Honorable Mention and Meritorious teams.
-
An annual one-day program, sponsored by the UVA Mathematics Department, for girls from local middle and high schools. It includes workshops on
advanced mathematics, discussions of mathematical careers, and problem-solving competitions to encourage girls
to continue their studies in mathematics. I have led sessions on Mathematics and Voting, the Legacy of Sonja Kovalevsky, and What can you do with a math degree?
-
Mathematics and Science Day for the UVA Young Women Leaders Program, Instructor (2008)
A one-day workshop for seventh-grade girls involved in a leadership program. Topics introduced included mathematical puzzles and regular polyhedra.
-
A one-week day camp for middle school girls run by female professors
and graduate students from the UVA Department of Mathematics. The program introduces students to advanced topics in mathematics,
emphasized problem solving, and encouraged girls to continue studying mathematics. I taught several sessions on complex numbers and served as a coach for a team of girls
throughout the week.
-
A regional science fair for middle and high school students. Affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
Campus Girl Scouts Science Badge Workshop, Instructor (2006)
A one-day workshop, sponsored by the UVA Campus Girl Scouts, for Junior Girl Scouts from local troops.
I led a session on mathematics that introduced ideas from geometry, binary numbers, and probability.
