Jonathon Schuch - Biographical Sketch 

Mr. Schuch is a Licensed Professional Engineer, an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at the University of Virginia, and is the Director of the University of Virginia’s Rehabilitative Services and UVA-WorkMed programs. Mr. Schuch earned his B.S. degree in Biological Sciences from North Carolina State University in 1981 and his Master of Engineering degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1984. For the past 28 years, Mr. Schuch has been actively involved in service delivery, education, and research related to assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering, with an emphasis on wheelchair seating and positioning. Mr. Schuch has developed and delivered more than 40 seminars on wheelchair seating and positioning throughout the U.S. In addition, he co-authored the University of Pittsburgh’s curriculum for the Assistive Technology Training Program for Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers, as well as the NIDRR-funded "Guidelines for Advanced Curriculum Development for Seating and Mobility Assistive Technology Practitioners." Mr. Schuch’s particular interests include: development of new seating technologies (front-latch subasis hardware, dynamic footrests, automatic wheelchair brake locks, CAD seating applications); seating interventions for individuals with extremely complex seating problems (multiple decubiti, severe amputation, significant contractures, extensive tone); and, perhaps most importantly, teaching and learning about assistive technology applications.

Over the past 5 years, Mr. Schuch has expanded his professional responsibilities to include the management of a comprehensive occupational health and medicine program (UVA-WorkMed) and the management of the University of Virginia Health System's Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology programs. His focus is to take these programs to new heights in the realm of clinical excellence, applied research, and dissemination.
