Jonathon Schuch - Biographical Sketch 

Mr. Schuch is a Licensed Professional Engineer, an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at the University of Virginia, and is the Director of Rehabilitative Services and UVA-WorkMed within the University of Virginia Medical Center. Rehabilitative Services include Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Engineering, and Speech Language Pathology. UVA-WorkMed is a comprehensive occupational health program, offering the full spectrum of services to employers and employees of Central Virginia.

Mr. Schuch earned his B.S. degree in Biological Sciences from North Carolina State University in 1981 and his Master of Engineering degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1984. For the past 25 years, Mr. Schuch has been actively involved in service delivery, education, and research related to assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering, with an emphasis on wheelchair seating and positioning. Mr. Schuch has developed and delivered more than 40 seminars on wheelchair seating and positioning throughout the U.S. In addition, he co-authored the University of Pittsburgh’s curriculum for the Assistive Technology Training Program for Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers, as well as the NIDRR-funded "Guidelines for Advanced Curriculum Development for Seating and Mobility Assistive Technology Practitioners." Mr. Schuch’s particular interests include: development of new seating technologies (front-latch subasis hardware, dynamic footrests, automatic wheelchair brake locks, CAD seating applications); seating interventions for individuals with extremely complex seating problems (multiple decubiti, severe amputation, significant contractures, extensive tone); and, perhaps most importantly, teaching and learning about wheelchair seating and positioning.
