Who I am

I teach writing, editing, and desktop publishing at the University of Virginia, where I am an assistant professor of creative writing, general faculty, and the associate director of the UVA Creative Writing Program. I am also faculty advisor for Meridian and Cavalier Judo, and was the founding series editor of Best New Poets.

Along the way, I served for twenty-four years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve with specializations in intelligence and port safety and security, and retired at the rank of captain.

A few tidbits.

One more thing

We can write about even the most complex problems with clarity and heart, and we can lead academic lives that are intellectually honest. That TJ guy was onto something when he wrote what has become UVA's mission statement, at least for me:

For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.

Yeah, I know that's old-timey Enlightenment stuff, but we still ought to try living like that, at least at a modern university. Those words are over a door to New Cabell Hall (first floor, Wilson Side). Check them out.
