Inner Tubing on the James

7/18/99

Be careful what you ask for!

Professor Demas wanted the students assembled at the curb at 9:00 a.m. for our appointment at Hatton Ferry at 10:30.

They were--and had been since 7:30 when the fire alarm went off and the police and fire engines arrived. They were dressed in assorted stylish statements like pajamas. Water had gotten from the 8th floor where the incident occurred all the way down to the student rooms on the 4th floor.

Not being dressed well, they were not eager to be photographed.

Fortunately, after 9:00 they were allow to go back into the building two at a time to dress and gather what they needed for the trip.

We did make the appointment--only a little late. James River Runners was very accommodating.

There is a blowup (surrounded by blue) of the center frame. Those are cattle in the water and students close to them. The conversation went something like this:

"You are getting awfully close. The bull is not happy. He is getting angrier and angrier. I wouldn't get so close. Good, they're getting out of the water. ..... That isn't a bull, its a cow!"

The aftermath: Tired, burned and scrapped (in some cases), and very happy

The dorm was very quite later in the afternoon.
