    TWO LECTURES THIS WEEK:

    Monday, Apr. 11, 3:20 PM, KER 317
Stephan R. Garcia, University of California Santa Barbara
    Real Smirnov functions and applications

Abstract: Loosely put, a real Smirnov function is a holomorphic function (subject to certain natural growth restrictions) on the open unit disk whose boundary values on the unit circle are real almost everywhere. We discuss aspects of a recent infinite-product expansion for real Smirnov functions and several applications (extending the Riesz projection to p < 1 using an idea of Aleksandrov, parametrizing kernels of Toeplitz operators, and explictly describing the invariant subspaces for the backward shift operator).

    Tuesday, Apr. 12, 3:30 PM, KER 326
Stephan R. Garcia, University of California Santa Barbara
    Complex symmetric operators

Abstract: The class of complex symmetric operators includes all normal operators, Hankel operators, compressed Toeplitz operators (including the compressed shift), and many integral and differential operators (such as the Volterra operator). We discuss some examples and several structure theorems for this class.
