Linear algebra modulo the compacts for composition operators

    Abstract:

Unlike the case of Toeplitz and Hankel operators, the set of composition operators has no obvious additive or linear structure. However, for composition operators on the standard weighted Bergman spaces, Jennifer Moorhouse has uncovered a natural additive structure modulo the ideal K of compact operators, along the way characterizing those pairs of composition operators having compact difference. I will report on joint work with Moorhouse in which we give analogues of these results for the Hardy space and also pass from sums to linear combinations mod K.
