Jean's Webpage for
Costume History Class
Assignment: Ancient
Jewelry: Greek
- Tribute to
Greek Jewelry - This site is a tribute to the Greek art of
jewelry-making. It was created by the Hellenic Silver- and Goldsmith
Centre (ELKA). It has some lovely examples of ancient artistry, as well as
modern Greek jewelry. An interesting feature of this site is that it
provides drawings and diagrams to to illustrate many of the ancient techniques
for working in fine metals.
- Hellenic
Ministry of Culture - The Ministry of Culture has a great website that
contains links to all of the Museums and Archaeological Sites under its
jurisdiction. I especially liked the lynx-headed necklace at the Museum of
Patras. The page for each individual museum or site has a link to the
site's own website. That's how I discovered the next site.
- Ilias
Lalaounis Jewelry Museum - This is a museum dedicated to Greek
jewelry, both ancient and modern. There are some lovely images on this
site, but they didn't post the entire collection here. I'm now seriously
thinking about visiting Greece just to see this museum.
- The Nikolis
Group - This website offers both raw materials such as beads and
castings, and finished products. The finished products look a bit modern
to me, but the raw materials could be made into authentic-looking Greek
jewelry.
- Greek Beads - I
hope this company is still in business, because it seems like it would be
a great place to find materials for authentic-looking Greek beads and
jewelry. This particular site is being refurbished, but the product page
is a very good example of a bad website.
- Ancient Touch
- This is a website where you can buy authentic ancient jewelry (they
don't have any available right now) and authentic beads -- or you can look
at the authentic beads for an idea of what ancient jewelry was made of.
