First Annual
Rudder-Elevator-Spoiler Contest 6/28/02

No sailplanes with control surfaces on trailing edge of wing allowed - so we all flew old timey balsa built-ups. And had a ball! A perfect day, with little wind in the morning. Lift was light, small, and spotty, except the occasional incredible boomer. CD Antonio's report at the bottom with final scores and chart. No damaged planes!

Antonio, contest director: I had a great time. It was hard staying ahead of Dimi, who proved that it ISN'T the pilot, but rather the plane - the Spirit100 flies great! Luckily (for me) it was the first time he'd ever flown it... (Antonio "shared" his 100 inch Spirit with Dimitri for the contest's duration) The air was tough at times, and then other times it was incredible. On one of the down-wind launch, windy rounds, I followed Tom towards the turnaround over the trees. The life was as strong as ANY i've ever been in. At one point I had full spoilers up, nose trimmed down, and I was still specking out to where I feared loosing sight of the plane.

Thanks to all who helped, specially the winch-wenches, Tom for setting up and tearing down while the rest of us lounged, Hedel and Marion for help score-keeping and doin' the math, Steve for motivation and web-site, Bob for the retriever, and everyone else for coming out, flying, ...

Here's the exciting round by round action: 7 changes of place in the last 3 rounds!

Eastern Soaring League Contest May 20-21 2002------------- Home

For ESL info see http://www.eclipse.net/~mikel/esl/esl.htm

This is our one big daddy contest of the year, Southernmost of the series flown from here to Massachusetts- with lots of out of town hot shots participating. It's the first East Coast contest of the season, giving us a chance to fly on our home field against competitors not yet honed by 8 months of contests. High Praise goes to Randy for driving for hours to get the contest equipment and repressing the constant assaults on his authority as contest director. Tom Broeski worked tirelessly to get the contest organized beforehand and has headed the Save our Flying Field effort. Mike Reno kept us fed and watered in a new highmark of catering. A number of out of town flyers spent 3 days traveling South down the Skyline Drive- slope flying overlooks and culminating Friday when Susan led a group to Brown's Mountain where they had 7 planes up at once on a SW wind!

Contest Saturday dawned wet and overcast but things started on time and proceded smoothly thanks to many energetic BRASS efforts (and Dale Hart's scoring). The 7th round wasn't completed because a violent thunder storm broke with several planes in the air. As tremendous wind knocked down shelters and a freezing downpour socked in visibility, two sailplanes managed to land barely on the field but Dimitri's Stork was spun away like a leaf. Blue sky and sun emerged within 10 minutes but no Dimitri. A few flyers crossed the road into a little neighborhood of closely packed houses looking for him. Residents kept pointing further down the street when asked about a downed plane. Rounding a corner, we saw a soaked Dimitri standing in an alley, transmitter in one hand, and barely blemished Stork in the other. Somehow it landed itself (with only a small knock on the leading edge) between two houses, apparently hitting a small tree with thin branches on the way in. Joedy flew his scratch built Magic all day, Antonio got his Stork flying and managed to land safely after a temporarily jammed aileron. Adam proficiently launnched his own plane all day and had great landings. Fred Atkinson flew and flew up at Brown's. A great time was had although Sunday was rained out.

January 5, 2002 Now this contest was an endurance contest but for January it was pretty nice weather although windy. Notice that the landing task changed with every round- thanks, Randy!

Dimitri  actually broke a stork wing in the air with his monster power-launch - but by the next weekend had it all fixed.
