Florida Everglades

RedMangroveFlower As part of Florida Coastal Everglades-Long Term Ecological Research (FCE-LTER) project, we are investigating the capacity of mangrove forests to exchange gases with the overlying atmosphere.  Our interest concerns the processes governing carbon sequestration by the mangroves.  Additional interests include the studies of hydrocarbon production from mangroves. Recently, we learned that red mangrove flowers release large amounts of monoterpenes such as the pinenes and limonene.  At the present, canopy models are being developed to study the interactions between regional climate and mangrove ecosystems in the Florida Everglades.
