We have lived in Charlottesville for 19 years.  As a department chair at UVA, a Rugby Road address is as close to ideal as possible.  The pleasant walk to the school is highlighted by the architectural beauty of the grand homes of Rugby Road, and leading to the Jeffersonian architecture of the Grounds.  The sight of the Rotunda never gets old.  The noise level and energy level picks up as you get close to the Rotunda.  A perfect start to the day.  And all noise subsides as you get to your home in the evening, a perfect end to the day.

We used to drive by this house every day for 12 years.  Then one day in February 2000 they put a For-Sale-By-Owner sign out, as we were driving.  We pulled into the drive, and made an offer!  And we have remained friends with the previous owners since then.

This was the house we were going to retire in.  We have since had two beautiful and active little additions to the family, and today’s toys are large!  For almost two years we drew plans for a major addition, but in the end decided against it:  the house is simply too beautiful and too perfect.  It should be preserved as is.

The Greeks were the first to realize the aesthetically-pleasing Golden Ratio, or the divine proportion. It is [1+sqrt(5)]/2=1.62.  Facing the front of 1329 Rugby Road, the length of 40 feet, and both a width and a height of approximately 25 feet are almost exactly in golden ratio.  This is why you notice 1329 immediately as you get on Rugby Road either from Dairy Road, or from lower Rugby Road.

This is also why a mathematician could never bring himself to change the perfect proportions of the house.  In the end we have decided to preserve these proportions and pass them on to you.
