- This is the biggest and most important California government site. Includes the California Codes, current legislation, and links to local governments. Has the permit and license handbooks full-text, plus tax information and forms, and the State Contracts Register. Also includes an index to individual agency sites.

- California State Library.
- The State Library has been a leader in providing information over the Internet. Several of Dr. Starr's weekly columns are here as well as his biography. The California Research Bureau can be accessed from here. Information important to libraries, such as the California Library Directory, funding, consulting and training are all listed.
- California Department of Finance
- This is where you will find California financial and economic data, demographic information and career opportunities.
- Employment Development Department
- The EDD has labor market information as well as job listings and other services.
- California Economic Diversification and Revitalization (CEDAR).
- CEDAR covers base closures and reuse, providing information for communities, businesses and individuals affected by base closures. Lists conferences, contacts and resources, not only from California sources, but from other states and the federal government.
- California Franchise Tax Board.
- This site has forms and instructions online, which must be viewed with
Adobe Acrobat. You can also find forms for 1994 and 1995. California does not offer a FAX service, but you can order forms by phone at 1-800-338-0505.
- Legislative Analyst's Office
- Provides fiscal and policy information and advice to the California Legislature.
- California Secretary of State
- For election information and political reform issues, this is the place to go.
- California Senate.
- The Senate home page includes a wealth of information, from information on Senate members to legislation. This well-presented page includes a helpful Tutorial describing how to locate legislative information. Try the link to Other Senate Offices and choose the Senate Office of Research to access their analysis of the state propositions on the upcoming ballot.
- City Home Pages in California
- Through the search engine Excite, browse the home pages of many California cities, and many more in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

- NASIRE StateSearch
- StateSearch is a service of the National Association of State Information Resource Executives and is designed to serve as a topical clearinghouse to state government information on the Internet, and includes links to the home pages of other states.

Useful federal sites:
- The U.S. Census Bureau, has nice data maps.
- Consumer Information Center provides for FREE, the full text of consumer publications produced by the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Education, Department of Agriculture, the National Cancer Institute, Department of Labor, the Food & Drug Administration, and others.
- The Department of Energy, includes information on nuclear testing and human radiation experiments.
- FedWorld includes an extensive collection of White House documents such as speeches by Clinton, transcripts of background briefings for reporters and major documents such as the National Performance Review, the National American Free Trade Agreement, the proposed federal budget, federal job openings in the U.S. and overseas, and a searchable Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance.
- Searching the Federal Register, with instructions how to and links to sites where it is available.
- The House of Representatives
- The Internal Revenue Service has the forms, instructions, IRS publications and those regulations issued since August 1995. You can search for forms by keywords or numbers and print them (but before you view a form you must have a viewer loaded such as Adobe Acrobat. Tax forms back to 1992 are available. A FAX service is also available for the 57 most requested forms by dialing 703-487-4160 from the voice unit of your FAX machine. Select up to 3 items, then switch to a FAX session. Publications and forms are also available by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM.
- Library of Congress's National Digital Library, including their list of government sites. You can connect directly to THOMAS or access the list of agencies. They also maintain an extensive list of other very useful governmental sites ranging from politics to international resources.
- Office of Educational Research Improvement. Provides education statistics and text of publications on educational issues.
- The SEC EDGAR.
- The Senate.
- Superintendent of Documents GPO ACCESS. This is where you'll find the Congressional Record, Federal Register, Congressional bills, etc. The infomation is available on the same day as the documents are published. Very comprehensive, and formerly only available through federal government depository libraries.
- Supreme Court Decisions The Legal Information Institute offers Supreme Court opinions under the auspices of Project Hermes, the court's electronic-dissemination project. This archive contains (or will soon contain) all opinions of the court issued since May of 1990.
