- The Chinese name for the
Shar-Pei is Sa Pèih, meaning "sand skin".
- There are three coat varieties
found in this breed: Horse, the most correct coat, is harsh and
prickly; Brush, softer and a bit longer, is also acceptable;
Bear, which is the softest and grows long enough to hide the
wrinkles, is considered incorrect (but sounds lovely to me!).
- Shar-Pei are now considered
by some sources to come in two types as a result of differing breeding
practices between the East and West over the last 30 years. The original,
Chinese style is called "Bone Mouth", while the Western
style is called "Meat Mouth" because the Western dogs
have thicker, droopier skin on the muzzle; additionally, the Eastern
dogs are wrinkled as pups but grow into their skins, while Western dogs
are largely bred to stay wrinkly. The difference between the two types
is striking considering how short a time the dogs have been bred to
different standards.
- For purposes of this bibliography,
I make no distinction between Standard and Miniature Shar-Peis.
- While widely known to be
a fighting dog, this breed was at its start a guard dog.

"Prevalence
of the breed-related glaucomas in pure-bred dogs in North America"
by Kirk N. Gelatt and Edward O. MacKay. In: Veterinary Ophthalmology,
March 2004, volume 7, issue 2, pg 97. A retrospective study of instances
of glaucomas in dogs, with data collected over an eight year period
for breed, gender, and age of onset. While glaucoma appears to occur
in most breeds at a rate similar to that in humans, the rate in
some breeds is significantly higher, with 22 breeds showing a prevalence
of glaucoma greater than 1%. This concentration of glaucomas indicates
a possible genetic basis. Among the breeds with the highest rate
of glaucoma was the Shar-Pei, at 4.4%.
