Miscellaneous Notes
  • The Norwegian Elkhound is also known as the Elkhound, Norsk Elghund, Noorse Elandhund, Grey Norwegian Elkhound, and Grey Elkhound.
  • Properly translated, the original name of the breed, Norsk Elghund, is Norwegian Moose Dog: "elg" means "moose", and "hund" means "dog". There are no elk in the Old World, and "elkhounds" are hunting spitzes, not hounds.
  • The Black Norwegian Elkhound, or Black Elkhound, a black phase of the Norwegian Elkhound that is sometimes but not always considered a separate breed, is also covered (or at least mentioned) in several of the books below.
  • In some countries, Norwegian Elkhounds and Swedish Elkhounds are considered to be the same breed, under the generic name Elkhound. Although I can appreciate the temptation to do this, the Swedish Elkhound does appear to have a lighter, leggier build that would seem to justify being classified as a separate breed.

A listing of genetic diseases to which the breed is prone.
  • "Evaluation of Canine COL4A3 and COL4A4 as Candidates for Familial Renal Disease in the Norwegian Elkhound" by AC Wiersma, LV Millon, AM van Dongen, BA van Oost, and DL Bannasch. In: Journal of Heredity, 2005, volume 96, issue 7, pg 739-744. Histopathological similarities between kidneys of Norwegian Elkhounds with familial renal disease, and human Alport syndrome, were the basis for a candidate gene approach in Norwegian Elkhounds. Three microsatellites were developed and used to analyze familial renal disease in a Norwegian Elkhound pedigree segregating this disease.
  • "The Silver Viking" by Dr. Nina P. Ross and Patricia V. Trotter. In: AKC Gazette, May 2005. Breed profile article and cover dog.
  • "Prevalence of the breed-related glaucomas in pure-bred dogs in North America" by Kirk N. Gelatt and Edward O. MacKay. In: Veterinary Ophthalmology, March 2004, volume 7, issue 2, pg 97. A retrospective study of instances of glaucomas in dogs, with data collected over an eight year period for breed, gender, and age of onset. While glaucoma appears to occur in most breeds at a rate similar to that in humans, the rate in some breeds is significantly higher, with 22 breeds showing a prevalence of glaucoma greater than 1%. This concentration of glaucomas indicates a possible genetic basis. Among the breeds with the highest rate of glaucoma was the Norwegian Elkhound, at 1.98%.
