- "Electroencephalography findings in healthy and Finnish Spitz
dogs with epilepsy: visual and background quantitative analysis"
by J Jeserevics, R Viitmaa, S Cizinauskas, K Sainio, TS Jokinen, M Snellman,
C Bellino and L Bergamasco. In: Journal of Veterinary Internal
Medicine, November-December 2007, pg 1299-306. In order to discover
whether an EEG could be used to distinguish between healthy dogs and
epileptic dogs, 15 epileptic Finnish Spitzes and 16 "healthy dogs"
(perhaps because the authors are not native English speakers, I'm cannot
be sure if the healthy dogs are Finnish Spitzes or not) were tested
by EEG while under sedation. The authors concluded that the EEG is a
useful tool, in combination with visual analysis, for examining epileptic
patients.
- "Magnetic resonance imaging findings in Finnish Spitz dogs with
focal epilepsy" by R Viitmaa, S Cizinauskas, LA Bergamasco, E Kuusela,
P Pascoe, AM Teppo, TS Jokinen, L Kivisaari and M Snellman. In: Journal
of Veterinary Internal Medicine, March-April 2006, volume 20,
issue 2, pg 305-10. A study of 11 Finnish spitzes with focal seizures,
using a control group of 3 healthy individuals. Results indcate that
these dogs suffer from focal idiopathic epilepsy and have nondetectable
findings on MRI or pathology.

- "Case-control study
of blood type, breed, sex, and bacteremia in dogs with immune-mediated
hemolytic anemia" by SA Miller, AE Hohenhaus, and AS Hale. In:
The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association,
15 January 2004, vol 224, p 232-235. Report on a study to determine
if blood type, breed or sex were risk factors for a dog's developing
immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, and also whether dogs with IMHA commonly
develop bacteremia. The study determined that Finnish Spitz and Rough
Collies, as well as female dogs in general, had a significantly
increased risk of developing IMHA; dogs with erythrocyte antigen 7 had
a decreased risk of developing IMHA. The authors conclude that blood
type, breed and sex all may play a role in IMHA in dogs. None of the
dogs studied had bacteremia.
