Former GOP presidential hopeful Steve Forbes attracted 60 Republicans to a $1,000~per~couple fundraiser in Albemarle County on Monday night for fellow flattax advocate and congressional candidate George Landrith.

Forbes called Landrith, the 5th District Republican nominee for Congress the kind of Republican who would kill the current federal tax code.

"He is one of those people who want to junk the tax code, bury it, drive a stake through its heart and hope it never rises again to terrorize the American people," Forbes said.

Forbes told the crowd at Edwin T. Burton's Earlysville home that a flat federal income tax simple enough for people to fill out on a post card would allow Americans to revive a sluggish economy.

"He is one of those people who wants to junk to tax code, bury it, drive a stake through its heart and hope it never rises again to terrorize the American people."

"Nobody understands the tax code any more and George knows that nobody understands the tax code any more," Forbes said.

Asked if he plans another run for the White House in four years, Forbes indicated the door to another aselffinanced candidacy is wide open.

"Running for president again will depend obviously on whether President Dole runs for reelection in 2000, Forbes said with a smile. He spent $35 million of his personal fortune to run this year and finished behind Dole and conservative Patrick Buchanan.

Lowering tax rates-which Landrith agreed should be a flat 17 percent for everyone, after family deductions - would actually increase federal tax revenue by stimulating the economy, Forbes said.
