This is the final bit of lecture about mechanical properties, and it focuses on Poisson’s ratio. This quantity was apparently first described by a French mathematician, and I’m sure this appears in Timoshenko’s History of the Strength of Materials. This lecture talks a bit about the typical values for Poisson’s ratio, and also mentions some peculiarities about cork and also auxetics. The video below shows my son and my auxetic structure made out of strip of flimsy cardboard. Anyhow, we don’t use this information all that much in this course, but it is an important part of being a technically literature engineer. And you’ll see it again later in the curriculum.
