Welcome to module 4 on strain and deformation. Funny how this semester starts off with all the best engineering jokes about stress, strain, fatigue, and failure. As we discussed, strain in our class is usually calculated as a change in geometry, and you can think of the little thought exercise we did at the end of class. The one where you used your hands to deform a pretend cube: (i) normal stress changes the volume, and (ii) shear stress changes the angle/shape of the cube. When thinking of shear stress, remember the robot (this guy’s almost as good as my 5-year-old). Here’s the Livescribe notes, courtesy of Chris Sweeney.
