Statics concept review

February 12th, 2008 · No Comments

You may recall that the first day of class, you took a few minutes to do a “concept review”–four questions which asked you to recall what you learned in statics. The point of this was two-fold: (i) it helps remind you of what’s important, and also highlights what you know and don’t know, and (ii) it lets me know how prepared you are to move into the 231 course. The results were generally pretty encouraging. Some quick thoughts:

  • Problem 1: a large number of people picked the right FBD
  • Problem 2: also pretty good, although some of you clearly have some V & M issues. Most common errors: M = max @ V = 0, M & V derivative/integral relationships, etc.
  • Problem 3: many people (maybe 50%?) missed the moment reaction at the square joint
  • Problem 4: a complicated problem, but the majority of students did pretty well on this one…good work!

There were about 10 students whose pre-test was a complete disaster. Hopefully you know who you are, because I sure don’t (remember, we didn’t collect any names on these). So, to those 10 students (and of course everyone else), if you feel yourself getting behind, especially when it comes to statics concepts, come see me ASAP to get you back up to speed.
