Lecture snippet on centroid and moment of inertia

December 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

As promised, I recorded a short narration of the lecture slides on centroid and moment of inertia, specifically in the context of problem 9-57. You have seen this twice in lecture (not recorded), so he is the archival version for you. Once more time, here are the important part:

  1. Always start by making a table which has enough space for both the centroid and moment of inertia calculations.
  2. Always measure the centroid locations y_tilde from the same datum.
  3. Always use the parallel axis theorem for moment of inertia calculations and measure d’s as the distance between the centroid of each component area and the centroid of the entire section.
